The Royal Caribbean Adventure
Ports of Call: Cozumel, Mexico | Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico | George Town, Grand Cayman
Travel became a reality for me later in life, but navigating airports alone remained a challenge. Preparing for my annual Texas trip to visit my son Desmond and his family required months of mental preparation. This time, however, I found myself packing something I hadn’t worn in decades—a swimsuit.
As I held the swimwear, contemplating its necessity, the phone rang. Desmond shared his excitement about scoring tickets for a Dr. Phil taping during my visit. “I’m packing my swimsuit,” I told him. “Maybe I’ll dip my toe in the water if we hit the beach.”
A few days later, Desmond called again, disappointed to announce the Dr. Phil taping had been canceled. It didn’t bother me; I often used my Texas visits as writing retreats. However, Desmond usually managed to pull me out of my routine for something memorable.
Then came a cryptic call from my daughter-in-law, Shontaye: “Do you have a passport?” she asked. When I confirmed I did, she simply said, “I’ll let you know.” Her love for surprises often tested my patience, especially when travel was involved—I need details!
A week before my flight, Shontaye revealed her plan: “Would you like to go on a cruise with us?” My immediate reaction was mixed excitement and hesitation. I had always wanted to cruise, often lifting the idea in prayer. However, I worried about the short notice. My overthinking tendencies were in overdrive, presenting every excuse to decline.
Yet, the opportunity was too extraordinary to pass up: a seven-day, all-expense-paid cruise with three island excursions, guided by a family of experienced cruisers. After a quick pep talk to myself, I called Shontaye back. “Yes, I’m in. But I might need to grab a few things to wear!”
“You don’t need to shop,” she reassured me. “Comfort is key on a cruise!” With that, my decision was sealed.
Setting Sail
I flew to Texas and, the next day, joined my family for an eight-hour drive to the New Orleans port. Along the way, Desmond acted as our tour guide, sharing highlights of the journey. Despite multiple Tesla charging stops, we arrived just in time to avoid the long boarding lines.
Stepping aboard The Royal Caribbean, I was awestruck. The ship’s 13 floors were a masterpiece of elegance and activity. My balcony room offered a stunning ocean view, which Desmond explained wasn’t standard for every room. Adjusting to the ship’s gentle sway took some time, but the warmth of the staff and the abundance of activities quickly put me at ease.
Onboard Adventures and Island Escapades
The ship offered something for everyone: live shows, karaoke, basketball, pools, hot tubs, and endless dining options. I admit I overindulged, but that’s part of the cruise experience, right?
The island excursions were unforgettable. The persistence of vendors was a lesson in determination, and the perfect weather made exploring a dream. The swimsuit I packed on a whim finally had its moment. Shontaye often said, “I’m so proud of you,” as I embraced experiences I never thought possible.
Swimming with dolphins and petting stingrays were moments of pure wonder. These were adventures I couldn’t have imagined but will cherish forever.
A Life-Changing Journey
Little did I know that packing that swimsuit was part of God’s greater plan to prepare me for an extraordinary venture. This trip was more than a vacation; it was a testament to the power of saying “yes” to the unexpected.
As I reflect on my first cruise, I am grateful for the love of my family, who encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. Life’s most beautiful moments often come when we least expect them.
