Crafting a Universe of Black Love
Monique Fisher is a rom-com writer with a superhero origin story. A lifelong theater and comic book geek, Monique’s creative journey took her from playwriting and television scripts to building an entire romantic universe—one hilarious and heartfelt novel at a time. With her pen firmly planted in the indie romance space, she creates cozy, character-driven stories that put Black women at the center of love, laughter, and modern real-life relationships.
Her tagline says it all: “Modern. Fun. Real Life Romance.” And that’s exactly what readers get. Her books highlight the humor, awkwardness, depth, and intimacy of everyday love between characters who feel like people you know—flawed, funny, and fiercely devoted. With six books under her belt, Monique has built what she calls the MRCU (Mo’s Rom-Com Universe), where side characters from one novel pop up as leads in another, and themes of family, food, and joy appear in every chapter.

Rooted in Creativity, Powered by Purpose
A self-published author, Monique writes what she wants—and she means that. Her philosophy is clear: write boldly, hire brilliant Black women to support your vision, and let the work speak for itself. Her editors, beta readers, proofreaders, and cover designers are all women of color. She’s intentional about who she collaborates with and equally intentional about what she puts on the page: low-angst love stories that showcase healthy Black love, both romantic and communal.
Joy is the heartbeat of Monique’s work. Though she doesn’t shy away from real-world issues like police profiling or generational trauma, her stories refuse to center struggle. Instead, she writes unapologetic joy, family bonds, and love that endures. Her characters aren’t waiting for love—they’re living it. “I want Black women to be loved down,” she says. “We deserve love, joy, laughter, and to see ourselves cherished without condition.”

Romance for Grown Folks
Her characters are grown—literally. Many are in their 30s and 40s, navigating life with wisdom, grace, and humor. Her most recent book, Spend My Life With You, follows a longtime couple finally ready to take the next step, proving that maturity and romance go hand in hand. “Not every story needs conflict,” Monique explains. “Sometimes love can just be soft, strong, and steady.”
Monique’s creative process is unpredictable in the best way. Ideas strike in dreams, during walks, or while washing dishes. A line, an image, or a memory can spark a new scene. She often speaks her dialogue aloud to make sure it sounds natural—drawing from her theater roots and playwriting days. Humor is essential, but she resists the idea that comedy can only come from banter. “Rom-coms are full of life,” she says. “There’s humor everywhere—in families, workplaces, barbershops, and friend groups.”
The Indie Hustle and a Bigger Vision
She’s proud of being an indie author and honest about what it requires—time, money, collaboration, and resilience. “This isn’t for the faint of heart,” she says. “You’re investing in yourself, and that means spending more than you make sometimes. But if you love it, it’s worth it.” Monique is determined to make writing her full-time career and dreams of adapting her MRCU into an animated adult TV series. Her ideal version? Think The Boondocks meets Girlfriends, with an ensemble of Black love stories that are hilarious, heartfelt, and real.
If you ask her who would voice her characters, she’s got a cast list ready: Winston Duke, Yaya DaCosta, Joy Bryant, Aldis Hodge, and more. Her imagination is expansive, but her focus remains grounded: build beautiful stories for Black women that reflect how powerful, funny, and loved they truly are.

Advice for the Bold and Creative
To aspiring writers, Monique’s advice is clear and unforgettable: “Write whatever the f*** you want.” Respect the craft. Find your tribe. And don’t be an a**hole—because reputation travels. “This world is small,” she says. “Be someone people want to work with. Stay humble. Stay hungry. And write with your whole heart.”
Monique Fisher isn’t just writing love stories. She’s reshaping the rom-com with truth, tenderness, and a lot of laughter. She reminds readers that joy is revolutionary—and Black women deserve to see themselves loved without compromise.
